First Sony HD Camera to Employ Half-inch CCD Represents Easy Migration from SD

PARK RIDGE, N.J., March , 2004 - Sony Electronics' new HDC-X300 compact high definition camera is an ideal solution for broadcast and professional customers looking for an entry point into the world of high-definition. The first Sony HD camera to use three new 1.5-megapixel, half-inch CCDs, the HDC-X300 is designed for an array of applications, including point-of-view (POV) acquisition, large-screen projection, 24P cinematography and studio automation.

The new camera's flexibility enables it to be mounted on a crane or in a helicopter, used as a studio sub-camera or weather camera, or installed in nearly any location within a venue such as stadiums, conference room, houses of worship, or schools.

"This new camera greatly expands the possibilities for HD cameras and opens the HD market to a broader spectrum of users," said Bob Ott, vice president of the professional audio and video group in Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Production Systems Division. "From POV capture to use as a companion with our high-end HDC cameras, the HDC-X300 definitely has applications that will appeal to everyone."

The HDC-X300 is switchable between a range of 1080 linear shooting modes, including 59.94i, 30p and 24p. With a minimum illumination of 0.003 lux with slow shutter, the camera features exchangeable lenses and slow shutter functionality (one to eight frames). Weighing less than three pounds with no lens, the camera also consumes less than 20 watts of power.

Key features include:
3 half-inch 1.5 million pixel HD 3 CCDs
HD SDI output
Down-converted SDI output (option)
Optical fiber interface (cable extension of approximately up to 1,500 feet)
Optional I/F slot (optical fiber or fiber multi-core)
Analog component HD output
Remote I/F box options
HDC-700 protocol, RS-232 controlled

The HDC-X300 is planned to be available in May at a suggested list price of less than $20,000.
