Colour Display And Integral GPS Makes The Motorola MTH800 Terminal A Winner For Three Of Britain’s Police Forces In 2004

Kent, Northamptonshire And Norfolk’s Police Forces Have Chosen Motorola’s Newest Airwave Compliant TETRA Terminal

London, UK - 21st April 2004 - Motorola (NYSE: MOT) today announces that three more of Britain’s Police Forces have chosen its latest Airwave terminal, the MTH800, for their officers to use on the Airwave public safety communications network.

Less than three months after its launch at the TETRA World Congress in Denmark, November 2003, the MTH800 seems to be well on the way to becoming the terminal of choice in the latest round of decisions on portable terminals for UK police officers. Contract announcements made early in 2004 by Kent Police, Northamptonshire Police and Norfolk Constabulary were all in favour of the MTH800 - a winner as far as their officer evaluations were concerned. Its innovative features including a colour display and integral GPS to transmit an officer’s location should there be an emergency are just two the features contributing to the MTH800’s success.

Flexibility is a common denominator for choice
All three Forces share a common goal - to deploy the best communication solution, in their opinion, for their officers on the beat. However, as with all organisations, the tailoring of the solution has to accommodate specific and individual needs. Gary Maughan, Motorola’s Director of Public Safety Terminal business in the UK, “The news that the first three Forces to announce contract award for terminals in 2004 have opted for Motorola is superb. We have worked closely with each force to ensure that as many aspects as possible of the product will offer the flexibility to deliver operational features needed now and for the future.”

The evaluation reports by Kent Constabulary officers and members of their Airwave team, showed they were impressed with the MTH800 terminal “which came top in both the technical and user evaluation trials.” Inspector John Kerbey, Airwave Project Manager for Kent Police continued, “We are looking forward to a close working relationship with Motorola in developing the MTH800 for our use and ensuring that the available technology is exploited to its full potential.”

Unanimous decisions
Inspector Dick Lewis, the Airwave Project Manager for Northamptonshire Police commented on the choice by their officers, ”Our operational officers, technical and police support staff were unanimous in their choice of the MTH800 having made a wide evaluation of all available terminals.” He added, “The main reasons for the choice were reliability, reputation, performance, compatibility and future-proofing.”

This reaction from officers is not surprising when the features of MTH800 are evaluated from an operational perspective. For example, its colour display offers exciting new possibilities in the fight against crime. In due course, an officer could download pictures of suspects, missing people or stolen items onto the terminal at the start of a shift for reference later on. With the breadth of colours and the resolution of the display, the images are easy to view.

A spokesperson for Norfolk Constabulary added, “Following a robust and in depth evaluation of the terminals available for our staff, Norfolk Constabulary has chosen the Motorola MTH800 as its Airwave terminal.”

Physical durability and portability
Today’s police officers have to carry a wide variety of equipment necessary for their job. The weight and portability of items, especially for officers on foot, are critical factors to consider in the choice of a radio terminal. The lightweight design of the terminal is unlikely to cause an additional burden to an officer carrying it in a shoulder harness, attached to body armour or simply clipped on a shirt. It has two integral microphones and a display that can be ‘flipped’ to make it easy to read, however the terminal is held. This all contributes to maintaining highly effective two-way communications, even in difficult operational conditions.

Compatibility with future technology
The MTH800 has been designed to enable users to adopt new services through its lifetime, with extensive memory capacity. This will mean that as new applications are developed, the software can be loaded on to the terminals, enabling officers to take full advantage of the latest technology. Motorola has been working closely with its customers to lay the foundations for future applications, such as providing access to Police and emergency service databases.
