The Growth of Charter School Admissions in the United States Has Skyrocketed

NewsreleaseDate: 2012-01-16

The school year 2011-12 saw the biggest increase in charter school admissions including high school admissions in the United States. The phenomenal growth is the highest so far since the creation of the first charter schools in early 1991, particularly in Minnesota where the first charter school law was passed.

The growth in charter school admissions this year is an increase of 13% over the previous school year. According to statistics, a growing number of students are enrolling in charter schools across the nation in recent years resulting to the opening of 500 new charter schools for school year 2011-12. It is estimated that there are more than two million students all over the United States currently admitted to approximately 5,600 charter schools in both primary and secondary levels. The number would have gone up higher should the 400,000 students on wait lists for charter school admissions get admitted.

The increasing number of students desiring to enroll in charter schools can be attributed to a lot of factors, some of which are inherent in the educational system of the country in general. The economic background of the demographics of the locality may also factor as well as the common perception of the general population on the current state of education offered by regular public schools in their respective districts. This is not to say that the quality of education in certain districts is unsatisfactory to cause an increase in charter school admissions especially high school admissions. Although lots of traditional district public schools are losing their students to nearby charter schools.

Some charter schools are ran by private enterprises or non-profit private organizations, they operate as public schools in accordance to the contracts or charters they sign with authorizing entities. Furthermore, charter schools operate as autonomous public schools free from the procedural requirements most district public schools should undergo. This liberal policy on charter schools may have triggered the recent growth especially in high school admissions across the states who host more than 80% of all charter schools.

Some analysts say that the interests of prospective students in charter school education might have been the result of positive feedback from parents as well as students who go to these schools. More often than not, charter schools market themselves as alternative learning institutions whose policies are more liberal including admissions of students from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds. As a result, a growing number of minority students find their way to charter schools. The perceived relaxed policy on this aspect is seen to be the catalyst of the phenomenal growth in charter school admissions in recent years.
