Rise of colon cleansers meets with criticism

NewsreleaseDate: 2010-07-29

One on the newest approaches to digestive health, colon cleansing, is seeking to win room on store shelves although fending off controversy. Ironically, the controversy continues to be stimulated mainly by a product much more than a century old: C.B. Fleet Co.'s Fleet Phospho soda laxative.

The product was removed from shop shelves following the Food and Drug Administration identified that patients utilizing higher doses of it to cleanse their bowels prior to colonoscopies ran the risk of creating a kind of kidney destruction known as acute phosphate nephropathy. The idea behind super colon cleanse have been close to a long time, although many with the products entering the mass marketplace these days are relatively new entries.

Marketers of colon cleansing products claim that diets heavy with processed foods, prescription drug intake, pressure and lack of exercise effect within the intestinal tract becoming clogged with uneliminated waste, which leach toxins to the body that can trigger symptoms ranging from headaches to fatigue to arthritis. As a outcome, they say, the body needs to be "detoxified" through the use of a colon cleanser.

First corporation looking to counter the damaging publicity--which involves criticism from specialist gastroenterologists--is Alavan Consumer Healthcare Inc., which markets the Dr. Natura line, consisting of Toxinout, ColonAide and Colonix. All 3 detox cleanse products are focused on cleansing the colon. Director of retail sales Angi Ulm acknowledges that the segment has suffered through the presence of disreputable products in recent many years but notes that the Dr. Natura line is formulated to promote colon health.
